Contemporary Japanese Print Works

are announcing their next exhibition

Japanese traditional woodblock prints, Ukioye, flourished in the Edo period. They appealed to many people in the growing merchant class, and the low price helped create a popular mass market. With the technology revolution in the Meiji period – the introduction of western printing technology and photography – its popularity declined.

In the late Meiji to early Taisho period two new print movements emerged:

Ø the Shin Hanga or ‘new print’ movement, a conservative style emphasizing technical perfection and romanticized images of traditional Japan; and

Ø the Sosaku Hanga or ‘creative print’ movement , a more experimental and individualistic style strongly influenced by European expressionism.

Japanese artists have well captured the beauty and essence of their native land and have tried to express their individuality.

This exhibition shows the diversity of Japanese print making from traditional Ukiyoe to more modern prints reflecting the broader aspects of Japanese modernism.

I am exhibiting works by Hokusai, Hiroshige, Kunisada, Imao Keinen, Mizuno Toshikata, Kikuchi Keigetsu, Fujimori shizuo, Ono Tadashige, Maeda Masao, Hiratsuka Unichi, Serizawa Keisuke, Maekawa Senpan, Maki Haku and many others.

the other morning as I was coming back from my early morning walk on the beach - the sun was just coming up and touching the edges of the lily ponds - the spectacle of the water lilies opening before my eyes was amazing - so with great glee the next morning I took my camera for the walk - so I could share this inspiration with you!! the river winds its way through the valleys of
the West Wimmera District of Victoria - Australia

But What History Hides There?

Harrow has more strings to its historical bow!

We treasure the exploits of our current cricketers
but do you know

where our first Australian Team came from?

In 1868 a small group of aboriginal players were coached by Charles Lawrenceinto an amazing cricket team, with the coach Charles - deciding to pit his team against the best Mother England had to offer!

He organized their passage and the remainder of the story can be read on the links below

For star of the team - Johnny Mullagh (13 August 1841 – 14 August 1891)
Harrow is the burial place.

As a member of the Australian Aboriginal cricket team, the first Australian cricket team to tour England. He was a skilful all-rounder, being a right arm bowler and right-handed batsman.

He was born in Australia in 1841 on Mullagh Station, a member of the Jardwadjali people, about 10 miles north of Harrow - Victoria and learned to play cricket whilst working on the adjoining Pine Hills agricultural property. He was given the name “Black Johnny” to distinguish him from a “White Johnny”.

Also known by his traditional name Unaarrimin (he was given the name ‘Mullagh’ to identify him with his place of birth), he played:

47 matches on the 1868 England tour
scoring 1698 runs at an average of around 20 on pitches that were often treacherous.

Spectators considered him the equal of any English batter.

He also bowled 1877 overs, 831 of which were maidens, and took 245 wickets at 10 apiece. If this weren’t enough, he would occasionally don wicket-keeping gloves, achieving four stumpings. Few contemporary cricketers better merited the title of all-rounder. His performances were impressive enough for him to join the Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC) as a professional.

The Mist Rises

In 1874 the children of Harrow were very excited - a new school was to be built on top of the hill over looking the town! Kids from all around the outlying properties would be able to have classes close to home!

Some of the dark red bricks were made down by the river of the local river mud and transported up the hill to build the initial 1 room class room ....... Later to become 2 class rooms!

Now 138 year later -
peeking from the windows are 3 energetic kids and their cousins - over the holidays racing to the waterhole to cool off! Running down the step steps to shop in the little town of Harrow - hidden away in the Glenelg River Valley in the Western Wimmera District of Victoria - The River twisting and turning and providing life for all the farmers and the town itself!!

It was announced today at the Art Gallery of New South Wales that Anne Judell is the winner of the 2011 Dobell Prize for Drawing for her work Breath, a triptych in pastel on fine paper.

Anne Judell was awarded $25,000 for winning Australia’s most important prize for drawing. A record number of 734 entries were entered this year, of which 49 are included in the exhibition, on display from today until 5 February 2012.

A frequent inclusion in the exhibition of finalists of past Dobell Prize exhibitions, Judell’s work is widely admired amongst artists, critics and collectors of contemporary Australian art.

Her drawings and pastels are often described as abstract because she deals with the ineffable:

Art, for me, is the mystery itself, as well as being the means to explore the mystery.

The Prize was judged this year by the distinguished artist Guy Warren. Of the winning entry he writes:

Although there are many works in this year’s Dobell which call urgently for serious consideration, the chosen work demands attention by calling softly. In a world of clashes and chaos this work speaks of something different. With dense layers and subtle surfaces it talks of the mystery of growth, of essences and fragility, of quiet contemplation. It is like a thought once understood and lost, which one tries to grasp again.

Born in Melbourne in 1942, Anne Judell studied at RMIT, has lived and travelled in Europe and the USA and moved to Sydney to live in 1977. Since 1992 she has lived and worked in the southern highlands of New South Wales. The Campbelltown City Art Gallery staged a survey exhibition of her work in 2002.

The Dobell Prize for Drawing, initiated by the Trustees of the Sir William Dobell Art Foundation is an acquisitive award, first awarded in 1993.

Time Traveller `Through the Fabric of Time

The Ochre Pits - Central Australia - Another piece of my inspiration!!

i am just completing some mixed media work which will include some images of

Roussillon in the Luberon Region of France

(pictures will be available shortly)

Roussillon is renown for it's many colours of clay and sand -

and it reminded me of a trip we did about 12 months before

to the Centre of Australia and the West MacDonnell Ranges -

where our own Aborigines collected ochre for many purposes.

Ochre has always been an important part of Aboriginal culture and a vital part of everyday life.

It has been used for medicinal purposes - red ochre can be mixed with grease and applied as an ointment and to relieve decongestion when mixed with eucalyptus leaves (can't imagine what this tastes like but when in need ........!)

White ochre was used as a magical charm, when mixed with water and blown from the mouth it is believed to abate the heat of the sun or the force of the wind.

Weapons were painted with ochre to increase the success of hunting. It also protected the wooden weapons from termites.

We stood in these ancient pits

What Inspired?

Late evening - afternoon on Griffith Island the trig station

marking the dunes and,

scary as the thought is - home to Australian Whalers - where

in 1836 John Griffiths built the

first whaling station and cottage

perhaps a darker part of our history -

also home to one of the early working light houses

in the region - 'The Port Fairy Light'

Talking Conservation and

Preservation!

the foundations of the light house cottage are still visible under the brambles

and a project has been approved and funded for the area to be cleared and

marked up so visitors can appreciate the ruins and where they are located!

Rodger Haldane - can take the credit for this initiative, the grand-son of Hugh Haldane,

who was the Port Fairy Harbour-Master and light keeper from.... 1929 until 1952 ....

not just a man of ideas but puts his energy where his mind goes -

'.......... Roger Haldane, has the answers. He and his late brother Clyde,

were there at the beginning, when the (mostly) Bulgarian and Italian

buffalo were loaded on to a plane in Denmark

(for export protocol reasons) and took off for quarantine in Canada

and, eventually, Australia ..... more!

given the previous post and my exposure close up to the conservation movement made me consider why and what I paint so I went back through my portfolio of work!

I thought I would share some of the motivations to paint and
was surprised at the level of wildlife that I have fallen in love with

privileged to watch these amazing creatures live -

a much darker palette and

finer detail evolved from this work!

still concentrated artist inks allowed to flow and blend

freely as they work their way across the paper from a

loaded brush and in some cases

from the bottle - simply splashed

and enabled with a light spray of water!

With this one though, smaller detail was completed

with a fine Japanese calligraphy brush and pen!

A Question of Life - New York Exhibition and Comp 2011

This piece was specifically conceived

for an exhibition and competition

held annually in New York -

the subject matter is set for the comp - this one was

'Where do we come from?

What are we?

Where are we going?'

Pretty much the Question of Life!

I have just started on the one for this years comp

(which will remain under wraps for now!)

so this prompted me to revisit and share this and the

winners for 2011 (check the link at bottom - join in the more the merrier) -

here's to 2012!

This work is a combination of oil glazing layered and layered
and impasto
applied with fingers and thumbs!

Has taken me back to the roots of my art and figurative work and
totally inspired a series of smaller work now in progress!

This piece is 1.5 x 1.5cm - on stretched canvas and wooden strainers
ready to hang or frame and hang.

I have been very lucky to spend time in some beautiful and often wild parts of our land!

This has proven to be an ongoing influence in all my work - landscapes and figurative -

so to share some of this with you - browse below at your leisure!

Griffith Island - was a whaling station in Australia

 in the 1830's and the ruins of the

old station can still be found in rocky foundations

now covered by much undergrowth -

the light house still stands stolid on the point -

lighting the rocks and warning still! 

A great spot to walk - imagine and wonder!

This piece of work has been bubbling away

since we came back from France,

and other whirl wind stops in May and June this year

So it may progress into a series - we will see!

The images are original photography from our journeying -

I have digitised and edited these on my Mac!

Thanks to Steve Jobs for this ability!

I sealed the paper with medium first and then

worked all the layers together with more medium, ink and acrylic

The edge - there is so much medium

on this paper

it has gone like leather! Fantastic!

share your thoughts - as this is a new medium -
I normally do large oils and very different technique
so this is a change of pace - I would love to hear what you think!

with some materials and techniques underneath for the devotees!

You can see the yellow masking fluid still on the paper
on the work above right and the blue masking tape
which I use to 'frame' the work until I am happy
with the initial deluge of ink and water -
so these are far from finished....
how did we get this far!

Medium/Materials:

Concentrated artist inks - these ones were Art Spectrum but I am sure there are others out there on the market!
Strong water colour paper
Masking tape
Masking fluid
different size calligraphy brushes
rigger brushes - for fine lines
pens - as many as you think you may need for various coloured ink
lots of clean water to wash brushes and pens and use as a medium to dilute the ink if you get the urge!

Technique - there is some applicable believe it or not:

You can stretch your paper as you would if you were tackling a water colour painting - though this is not necessary - however, be aware that un-stretched paper will buckle and that will mean that you inks will run very unevenly - if this is the desired effect - go for it!
Mask up any areas you want to keep white (or negative) to work other colour or design into later - if using masking fluid you will have to set the work aside until the fluid dries totally or the ink will go through it to the paper.
If you would like to have a variation of light to shade either use a brush loaded with ink to mark the area you need and then quickly rinsing the brush - load it with crisp clean water and drag the ink away from your original line area - as you pull away with the wet brush you will see the ink run after you - it does produce a lovely effect.
Wet on wet techniques work with the ink as well - so you will get the gradation and mixing of colours, which do produce amazing derivations of tone as you would with water colour paints.
While the work is wet you can use your 'Rigger' brush to draw fine detail using the wet ink and this again produces an opportunity for you to achieve wonderful colour mixes.
You may decide to let your work dry over night and lay another series of splashes and splotches to enhance the detail and the colour.
When all the work is dry you can come back into the work with pen and ink - small brushes and add any detail you can conceive!! If you are a scrap booker or collage artist these all add interest!

Above all stay loose - let the colour and the imagination flow!

Pieces of Eight People on the ground in Melbourne

check out this amazing installation in Federation Square!

Reminding us of Ernesto Neto's sculptures, this rather amazing tape installation has been created from 360 rolls of industrial clear tape at Federation Square. A cocoon-like structure, it allows up to 50 people to crawl inside it at any one time.

Our hats off to the Numan/For Use for this inspired project!
